No names of the involved companies were mentioned in the announcement. However, reports indicate that these companies include British, American, Canadian, Israeli, Danish, and Dutch firms. Furthermore, major oil service companies like Schlumberger, Halliburton, and Baker Hughes have stated that they will not cooperate with oil projects near the Falkland Islands.
Argentina's President, Javier Milei, reiterated his country's claims over the Falkland Islands in a speech on Thursday and announced that he is seeking harsher sanctions against companies involved in oil projects in the region. He also referred to global changes that seem to favor Argentina's claim over these islands.
Reactions to New Political Moves
Milei's statements come as reports suggest that the United States is reviewing its position regarding the Falkland Islands. These changes could lead to further tensions in relations between Britain and the United States, especially if Britain fails to increase NATO's defense budget.
British Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, in response to these statements, emphasized his country's "unwavering" commitment to the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, stating: "The Falkland Islands are British because their inhabitants have chosen to be British."
