In a world where technology and science are rapidly advancing, a startup in Bangalore, named Dognosis, aims to provide a new way to detect cancer and other diseases by leveraging the exceptional sense of smell of dogs. This project involves dogs like 'Chalo' fitted with a helmet and a ۳D-printed harness equipped with multiple sensors to examine the brain activity, breathing, and body language of these animals.
Advanced Technology and High Accuracy
According to the founder of the startup, dogs can sniff thousands of times per hour, and each sniff can gather valuable information. Results from a recent study show that this method has achieved over ۹۰% accuracy in identifying seven main types of cancer. Meanwhile, in India, many patients only suspect cancer when the disease is in advanced stages.
Dognosis hopes to commercialize this technology by next year and be recognized as the third company of its kind in the world. This startup, with the support of investors and collaboration with government medical institutions, aims to create an initial layer of easy and affordable screening to identify suspicious cases.
Challenges and Hopes
Cancer specialists in Bangalore are also cautiously optimistic about this technology. They emphasize that this study requires further investigation with larger groups to draw more accurate conclusions. At the same time, this startup seeks to enhance human-animal communication and promote preventive medicine.
The majority of the dogs in this project are Beagles, and only the best are selected for this work. These dogs are trained at a center called 'Sniffspace' and are taught to detect specific scents using positive reinforcement systems. This method not only helps improve disease detection but also gives the dogs an opportunity for a suitable 'work-life balance.'
