Joseph Aoun, the President of Lebanon, met with Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, at the Élysée Palace before the preliminary meeting of the conference to support the Lebanese Army and security forces. This meeting took place as Lebanon seeks to address its security and economic crises.
Efforts to End Israeli Attacks
During this meeting, both sides discussed the efforts made to end Israeli attacks. In this context, negotiations involving Lebanon, the United States, and Israel, as well as the proposed framework agreement, were mentioned. The Lebanese Presidency Office announced that Joseph Aoun thanked his French counterpart for France's continuous support for Lebanon and his personal follow-up on the situation in the country. This support includes strengthening the authority and sovereignty of the Lebanese government and backing Lebanon's official, security, and military institutions.
Strengthening Economic and Energy Cooperation
The President of Lebanon also expressed appreciation for the initiative proposed by Emmanuel Macron in collaboration with the Prime Minister of Italy for the post-mission phase of the United Nations peacekeeping forces in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL. This initiative is considered an important step towards enhancing security and stability in Lebanon and the region.
During this meeting, it was agreed that contacts and consultations would continue, and areas of cooperation in various fields, especially in the economy and energy sectors, would be strengthened. Both sides also emphasized the importance of resuming oil and gas exploration in Lebanon's oil blocks. These activities are seen as a significant source for the country's economic growth and energy supply.
Given the current situation in Lebanon and the challenges facing the country, this meeting could be a sign of international resolve to support Lebanon and strengthen stability in the country.
